Episode #9~ ” You Cannot be What you Cannot See”, a Conversation with Grace Bonney
In 2004, Grace Bonney starting blogging, when blogging wasn’t popular, as a hobby, on her breaks from work. Her blog Design*Sponge focuses on design and decor and is a go to for diy’ers with a daily readership that is out of this world.
In 2015, Grace Bonney set out to write a book that would look at the lives of women who were artists and makers similar to what she had done with her blog, Design*Sponge, but this time she would write a book that presented a greater diversity of women, intensionally presenting women who were different than who she had profiled in the past. “In the Company of Women” , with 100 women profiled, would be the basis of conversations and meet ups around the country and a source of inspiration for many.
In 2017, as Bahia Akerele, On the Purple Couch boss lady, began to review her time as a shop keeper and as a gift to her customers, she hosted a Free monthly meet up that used Grace’s book, as a guide.
” You cannot be what you Cannot See!” said the Marian Wright Edelman, American Activist and the President of the Children’s Defense Fund
Grace opens her New York Times Best Selling book with the above quote, setting to map out for us, the reader, the eager business women and the seasoned entrepreneur and others, stories that are just not our own, but those of the many women we share this world with.
In their conversation, Bahia and Grace discuss several issues impacting women in business and the importance of presenting the views and perspective of a diversity of women. That diversity is not limited to race or socio economic status but of time and space as it relates to their businesses and more.
