Name and profession:
Kathy Jentz, editor/publisher of Washington Gardener Magazine
Where do you live: County or region is cool…
– downtown Silver Spring, MD
How did you find out about On the Purple Couch, A Place to Create?
– I used to walk over there at their original location on Bonifant Avenue in downtown Silver Spring.
How long have you been teaching your course work?
– I started speaking on gardening topics about 8 years ago and on flower arranging in the last 3 years.
What to do like most about creating?
– I really like that zen state you enter when the worries and cares of the rest of your life fall away and it is just you and the flowers.
Where do you create and what does it look like? Is it in your home, garage studio or whatever…tell us about your creative space
I garden both at my home and at a community garden plot across the street from my house. I have eliminated all turfgrass lawn and use every inch of my space for both ornamental plants as well as edibles. A lot of the flowers I use in my flower arranging come from my own gardens and that is doubly satisfying.
Can you share a favorite quote?
“I’d rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck.” ~Emma Goldman
Tell us about your class..anything…what will a student learn?
What I hope my flower arranging students learn is that there really is no “wrong” in flowers. They will look good, no matter your arranging skill level.
Are you taking a class yourself and if so what is it?
Yes, starting taking improv classes and am also thinking of doing one soon on hosting a podcast.
What does creating “do” for you?
It relieves gives me a sense of accomplishment. I love to share my creations as gifts to friends and relatives and that is very satisfying.
Anything else you want to add….Your time to share/shine…
I am a life-long gardener and believe that growing plants should be stress-free and enjoyable. My philosophy is inspiration over perspiration.
Thanks for the interview Kathy and thanks for being part of the On the Purple Couch family…..Bahia
